Defragging

I have tried defragging my computer but witth no luck. I keep getting told that there is a problem with the disc and to scan it .
When i scan the disc everything feezes and the bar gets to just over halfway and i have to try again. I've also tried quitting programes before defragging but my computer just keeps closing down. My computer has not been defragged for about 4mnths. I'm on ME can anyone help.

Run it in safe mode (press F5 or F8 when booting up).
