I completed 8 years then had to retire through an injury but that was in the 1970's when police work was vastly different. Now there are not enough officers on the streets and crime is not investigated properly with a lot not even recorded. With the society of today yobs are carrying weapons and they have no respect for the police or any of the emergency services. I certainly would not want to be in the job today. As has been suggested, maybe security work or CCTV if you prefer an office job. Good luck with whatever you choose.
How about working in 'Loss Prevention' for a nationwide high-street retail company? Mainly office based, although there are often positions which travel to stores to check procedures are being adhered to.
An office based role would mean overseeing the security camera hub and dealing with any issues - also on an advisory capacity should there be new store fit-outs (camera locations/ safe specs/ alarm & safety glass protocol etc) and dealing with any instances of duress at the stores/ liaising with police & local security schemes etc
Your previous experience would give you a head start in this type of role - Look out on Reed.co.uk with the keywords 'Loss Prevention'. I know the team in my company love doing it and find it interesting even after several years
Good luck with whatever you do decide to go for :-)
