My Uncle is a fairly well know magician and recently had to perform a full magic show at The Magic Circle. The audience were all magicians and I can't help thinking, "What's the point in that?" For example, all of the audience would know how all of the tricks were done.

What is the point of that?

I think if he can impress an audience of magicians, he could not fail to impress an audience of non magicians. A kind of test maybe ?
More to the point- who's ya uncle?

Point is that if he is to become a member of the Magic Circle he has to demonstrate his abilities in front of the other members. They then vote on whether he's good enough to be admitted.

He's already a member though.

I mind on a programme (an OU prog I think) about the way folk think. A guy correctly guessed the name of a card chosen from a pack of cards. The trick was performed in front of a group of magicians and they were tasked how it was done. They suggested different techniques such as forcing, planting etc. The same trick was performed in front of children and they were asked how it was done. Most of them said it was a pack of 52 of the same card.

Guess who got it right?

Magic is not about the tricks - it's about the performance. Some very well known magicians are not that good technically, but they have shows that entertain people whether they are magicians or not. Magic is finally moving out of the cheesy cabaret style that epitomised it for years so the entertainment value is spreading out.
ace, pleased to hear your uncle's a member already, well done to him. Maybe he just had a new slant on some old tricks and was invited to demonstrate. Or maybe magicians just like their subject so much that they can't get enough!
