I was a tomboy, still am, mostly. I wanted to be a boy because I preferred their toys. My mum bought me 'boy' toys because that's what I wanted. Children should be left to decide for themselves. She'll probably turn out to be a gorgeous woman. But she'll decide.

That was my first thought, Jan, too :-)
Couldn't agree more!
"On the other hand it's irresponsible parenting not to discourage behaviour that is likely to lead to ostracism of them by their peers/school chums, thus affecting them for life."

Children can be, and are, bullied for all sorts of reasons. Including in my case showing academic ability. Perhaps ky parents should have discouraged that for fear I'd be bullied about it?

Obviously not. Children should be encouraged to explore themselves and indeed it would be irresponsible parenting not to do so.
