I've been told that if I travel on Sundays on an ordinary ticket, I can upgrade to First Class for about £15. Is this true?

if you're going crosscountry, this might be of interest.... http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/special-offers/treats-and-discounts/weekend-upgrade

Depends on the operator - Virgin is usually £10 - but depends on how full the trains are as to whether it is offered 'on the day'.

I will be going cross country, so will use three different operators I think. Would I be able to upgrade on the train if I get an ordinary ticket?

That's really helpful mushroom. Many thanks.
You will have to pay each operator separately and each operator has different rues and amounts charged. South West Trains is £5. However you usually have to have an off-peak ticket. The upgrade is not generally available for Advanced tickets. This explains which operators offer Weekend First http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/pr3744bcc35ce7410024862c7ece4649.aspx

Thank you Cathy. I travelled yesterday and was able to upgrade on my journey to London for £10. The rest of my journey wasn't busy so I didn't upgrade.
