when i was a kid, the omen scared the bejesus out of me ,i think it was the music that made it worse ,dunno what it was called but it was in the old spice adverts at about the same time. 666
My two personal choices are very different - my first choice is always 'Dead Of Night' a 1940's portmanteau film, with the final segment involving Michael Redgrave as a ventriloquist - I saw it as a child, and it gave me a fear of large dolls and puppets that i still have now! My second fave is 'The Tenent' a little known Roman Polanski film - if you want to know what the word 'paranoia' really means, watch this film. Don't have nightmares!
I know its pretty tame by today's standards but Quatermass scared me rigid, once again the music made it worse - Gustav Holst's "Mars the God of War". I love that music but it really is aptly titled isn't it, it just couldn't be called anything else.
I went to see the Exorcist at a large widescreen cinema when it was first released. No one warned me beforehand that it was particularly scary. I don't remember ever being so scared, particularly when the little girl slowly turned her head right round. I've seen it again more recently and the whole film seemed quite comical.
I'm with you on that Beenee - isn't it weird how totally bizarre behaviour can be really scary. Molly - I bet you saw 'The Exorcist' on video? Being at home with a pause button ready is far different from breathing in the tension of a few hundred other petrified souls, with a huge 'in-your-face screen telling the tale, and no-where to pop out and make a cuppa!
"Wicker Man" did it for me! It was that poor guy getting burned alive with no superhero coming to rescue him, that feeling of being trapped and out of control. And it probably scared me more than outright horror films simply because it was understated. Psychological horror always the worst?
Id go for either Quatermass and the Pit, o rmaybe ten rillington place. dickie attenborough made a wnderful psychopath. shame about the directing career.
A French film from the 50's "Les Diabolique" is very creepy. I was up late one night and watched it not knowing what to expect. Also, a film that has caused much debate on this site: "The Ring" ( US ). Again watched it not knowing much about it. Good God!!! First time I've been genuinely scared watching a film in years.
