For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.That sounds like the sound driver has become corrupted. (It's quite common; it's happened to me several times over the years). You'll need to download the driver installation file, double-click on it to run it and then restart your computer. (Alternatively, you could try running System Restore, from Start > Programs > System Tools > System Restore, but reinstalling the driver is definitely the preferrred method).

Download the file and double-click on it. (It's probably a 'self-extracting' zip file but, if not, you might be presented with a window with a file inside it. If that happens, double-click on that file as well). After doing that, which should reinstall your sound driver, remember to restart your computer.
