Hi
Is there anyone else reading this who is a recruitment consultant and does not get any job satisfaction from it? I started on a graduate training scheme and realised after a few months I'm not a sales person. However I'm still here a year later! It doesn't matter as I'm planning to go and do Tefl in Spain. I just wondered if anyone else thinks sales jobs are boring, very pressurised and full of arrogant people!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Recruitment consultancy is often portrayed as a very trendy, perhaps slightly glamorous job. People, particularly graduates often go into it thinking it's an HR job without realising its a high-pressure sales role.
The upside of this is that for the right person it can prove a very lucrative career option. I personally know two people who have been consultants for 9 and 12 years respectively and pride themselves on their professionalism.
The downside is that the many dubious tactics these people employ give other salespeople like myself a tarnished veneer. Things like...
- Lying over the phone to candidates and clients
- Advertising non-existent jobs
- "Fishing" for contacts
- Placing people in jobs they aren't really suited for in order to hit a target.
In America, salespeople are viewed in the same light as doctors and lawyers. In the UK such a statement would get you laughed out of the room. Recruitment firms aren't helping to change this.
