They were invented by a vast secret international network of sinister sadistic alien schoolteachers who have come to Earth to cause maximum misery to successive generations of innocent children. My theory is that the origin of Greek myths and many ancient myths is in the human body itself. We have a capacity to make up stories to fit with our psyches. For example the story of Oedipus fits in with how little boys want sometimes to destroy their daddies so that they can fully possess their mothers, they need not to succeed so that they go on to fall in love with someone who reminds them of mother, however unconsciously, so that the human race continues.
