Can a 3.5" SATA 2 internal hard drive be replaced with a 3.5" SATA 3 internal hard drive?

If this is possible, is there any advantages or disadvantages?

You can put a SATA 3 hard disk in a PC that is only SATA 2, but it will only run at the speed of SATA 2. So you can do it, but you wont gain anything. SATA1, SATA2 and SATA3 define the speed the data is transferred, the higher the number the faster the data goes. They are all backward compatible.
