The cost of these surveys ( which I think have to be done every 4 years ) varys a lot. Obviously things like the size of boat, amount of electrics, items that use gas affect the cost but also attitude seriously affects the the cost also. One of my boats was over 20 yrs old but because it was very basic, ie. hull + engine it didn't need a survey. Hope this helps a bit.
A survey is certainly a good idea on any boat. Mine cost 70 per metre and ended up saving me over 10K because I was able to negotiate on the results.
You might need a survey for insurance. He will check things like the hull for osmosis, the electrical system, the fuel system, not usually the engine unless you get a mechanical survey.
You don't usually have to have an inspection every 4 years. You may have to have a boat safety cert but the size of yours will not be big enough.
I have a good surveyors details if you would like, he works on the Thames mostly.
