An unhappy memory from almost 60 years ago. My mother had a nervous breakdown and my father had to go to work so my young brother and I, aged 8 and 3, were put into a children's home. On arrival I was asked what was my name. I said, M.. They replied, "We've already got an M... do you have another name?" I replied, "G..."

"Oh, we don't have a G... so we'll call you G..."

I was only there for two months, but even at that tender age I felt that I had been robbed of my identity.
