Hi TWR, was there a reason why you asked? I'd say the definition of 'hero' means something different to each of us. It could be sqads definition, it could be the many carers dotted about going above & beyond out of love. It could be someone's achievement through adversity.
Interesting question!
My father fought in ww11. In the line of duty he lost his leg. He never considered himself a hero, he would say "I was just doing my job".
Funny thing is I sort of know that my father killed people. He would never waste a bullet by shooting above people's heads. He would kill as that was what he was there for. But he found talking to me and my brothers very difficult and was always distant.
I heard a story on radio 2 about a man that was abused as a child. He became a drug addict (or scum as some people like to describe them) a male prostitute, homeless etc. He was now beginning to put his life together. I am cynical and it takes a lot to make me cry but I did when I heard his story. I would call him a hero!
I think heros' are around us they just don't look like how we would expect them to look!
On a personal level, my hero is my brother, for coming to terms with an illness & eventually accepting his limitations & all he's had to forfeit as a result in good grace.
My granddad Reg was a runner in the trenches at Ypres in WW1. He received a Commanding Officer's commendation which says "he acted with no thought to his own safety and got his messages through every time". He survived but was gassed and lost half his foot. He's a hero to me.
