From 1st October you will no longer have a paper disc to display - no change in the VED rates, just the abolition of the actual disc.

What do you think of this?

It means that the ordinary 'man in the street' has no way of knowing whether or not a vehicle is taxed. Only the Police and other 'appropriate authorities' will have access to a database showing details of a vehicle's tax status.

I think it's just plain wrong.

In fact (rather than abolishing the tax disc) we should be adopting the Irish system where every vehicle has to display three discs - tax, insurance and NCT (=MoT).

That way everyone could see who is legal and who isn't - which would be (in my opinion) 'A Good Thing'.

All a bit odd really, because I don't think the police impound cars for no MOT, and even if they do then PCSOs can't do it.
I fear I am, xxx
Hopkirk, it was a bit of a *** really. Not the best day, the PCSO was a bit zealous, it was busy, it was hot and I was fed up - plus someone reversed into my poor old car and then pretended he couldn't speak English.
Hopkirk No MOT is a fixed penalty no points on licence no impounding of vehicle unless it is so bad it is dangerous to be on the road. You could hardly have the police taking your car away because you forgot the MOT date.
As to the main point of the question, having read the link about the new rules , no transfer of tax on sale and the rest, it looks like the new system will be better than the old one.
eddie

yes you could ( imagine the police taking the car without an MOT )
because it means it is not insured innit ?

and they will obviously wip e an uninsured car off the road
I totally agree with you Dave (now that I've managed to stumble upon your thread) re the 3 visible signs of roadworthylegalness.
It is the "double" loss that annoys me... Sell your car in the middle of the month and both the seller and buyer loose half a month. So the DVLA/Government make money.... £19 on a vehicle with a rate of £230. Now here is an idea they won't like .... as there is no printed paper disc with all the various expiry dates, why not just run the tax from the actual date for 6 or 12 months just as your MOT does?
