We get lots of helicopters and the odd military aircraft where I live but this afternoon there was something v weird. I heard a noise like a cross between thunder and a howling gale (v different to the noise of a fighter jet) and I could tell something was approaching so I looked up (and out of the back window) and something whooshed by (very, very low and quick) and as it did so the electric went off. It was the strangest feeling ever, even the kids were looking around them before it happened, you could almost sense it before it flew past.

You cannot mistake the sound of these....

Drone testing sounds plausible, where abouts are based Sherrard!?

Having looked at Sunny Dave's link and googling 'taranis' I'm going with that - I'll keep a look out for it (though I probably won't need to, I'll be able to tell that it is about and then all the lights will go off!).

Hi Slapshot, just outside Hereford by the army camp (one row of houses away - we see lots of interesting stuff around here).
Drones .... most likely
Scary, nonetheless.
Not as scary as a phoon at 300 feet 400 knots... don't hear the beggars till their gone!!

I don't mind fighter jets or even the helicopters (but annoying at night time) but this was a bit spooky almost because I could tell something was about to happen. I'll be well *** off if it blows my Sky box.
ooooh send them over the East Midlands Sherr, we love all aircraft and especially anything unusual :)

I love military planes but this one wasn't 'right' (I have seen a stealth fighter and that was v cool) - it was odd that you could tell something was about to happen (and I wasn't keen on it blowing the electrics).
I bet it's something new and hush hush - they kept the Blackbird secret for many years - radar jamming is old hat now, as is EMP (electro magnetic pulse technology) This interferes with all electrical equipment.

Could be some pilot forgot to turn off his state of the art EMP gadget?
Thanks for the story link, Ann.

On the one hand, probing missions are routine (or were more frequent, in cold war era) but, on the other, the remarks about Crimea and latest Litvinenko revelations are right on the button, or just an interesting coincidence, depending on your point of view.
