does anyone know how they actually got to the trenches in world war 1

i've recently been studying ww1 & ww2 and some people believe that they would reach the trenches with the cover of nightfall because about 30 soldiers would hide in small ditches created by the rain and they would keep heavy fire on the enemy just long enough for a few trench diggers to get in a deep hole and start building a tunnel so the rest of the army could join the battle

The fighting trenches would be parallel to those of the enemy, The approached was made by means of "communications trenches", often many hundreds of yards long, that were dug in a zig-zag line between the front line and the comparative safety of the rear. If the area were swept by enemy rifle or machine-gun fire, the zig-zag prevented the fire from travelling down the length of the trench, and thus provided a degree of shelter to arriving or departing soldiers.

The topbrass tried to stop this and agressive elite regiments were put in quiet areas to stir things up with frequent raiding parties. They often used mobile mortar sections, turning up unexpectedly in sleepy fronts, firing off and then getting out quickly leaving the irate troops to face the retribution, forcing them to fight.
