Bit Of Medical Advice, If I May Ask...

I was due to have a hernia repair new years eve, I had to let them know I had a chest infection, so it was cancelled.
I have standby anti b's and steroids at home for such an occasion.
Since then I have been given three more dates. 15th January was cancelled due to lack of surgeon, 4th February was also cancelled. Then they re offered 15th January. I went along, had all the bits and bobs done, and anesthetic chap declined to go ahead.
Re scheduled for 29th January.....yesterday I woke with ANOTHER chest infection. I immediately started anti b's do you think I will be ok to go ahead? Reluctant to cancel again.

Did the anaesthetist give you a reason for not proceeding on the 15th ? If it was down to your chest infection 2 weeks earlier ... then there's a possibility the same thing may happen next week.

He said it was due to previous heart attacks, and that day surgery, and keyhole wasn't suitable. He thought I would be better as an in patient. The chest infection had cleared by the 15th.

If it's cleared up by the 29th - go in as scheduled. Hope all goes well.

I reckon the anaesthetist was right. You should be an in patient if you have had heart attacks so that if anything goes wrong you would be in the right place for remedial work. Better safe than sorry, as the old saying goes.

Take your antibiotics and steroids and as long as there has been no deterioration in you chest infection, present yourself for your pre-operative assessment as usual.

Thanks all, I am pleased to say I think I may be ok, loads better this morning. I still have evidence of the infection, but my lungs no longer feel like they have been wire brushed. Having the anti b's on hand helped a lot I think.
Squad, already had the pre assessment, so another not needed.
I don't want to take risks, but as long as I continue to improve I shall go ahead. Many thanks.

Things must have changed. A pre-assessment was just that.....a check before operation....not a week or ten days before an operation, the night before and sometimes on the same day.

Mabye get ur bloods checked prior.

I might be being OTT but you are at higher risk of developing a chest sepsis surley... And you could become much more unwell.

Happy to say I have had the repair, and am home. The hole was bigger than they thought, so a couple of bits of mesh added. Felt well after the anaesthetic too, such a change. First time I have actually found it a decent experience....face in pea soup, of bed flooded with o/j, hallucinations etc etc. None of that.
