I have had this on and off for a few months now, I thought it was tendonitis, but researching suggest not, the swelling and pain is very localised and I don't run or do exercise in the gym. It is most painful after resting when I stand up and my foot doesn't want move or bend at the ankle. Any ideas?

I haven't quite got the picture here....where is the swelling and and is it diffuse or can you feel a distinct swelling. If the latter, where is it and is it soft, hard or movable?
ouch..hope it gets better soon ratter ..wear a support when out with the hounds ?
Question Author
The swelling is on the Achilles tendon just above the heel at the back and there is a distinct swelling, I wouldn't say it was hard, and not movable.

Have you tried Ibuleve gel, Ratter?

Yes...clearly it is an Achilles tendinitis and you don't have to be an Olympic athlete to develop this.

I agree with Tilly and also take Ibuprofen by mouth.

It will take about 10 days to settle.

Thanks all, I wont bother with the gel, total waste of time in my experience, however the ibuprofen tablets may be a last resort if the pain level necessitate.
I had achilles tendonitis and found that the gel did actually help...apparently it's ok for pain near the surface but a waste of time for deep seated. By far the best relief though was from the stretching exercises recommended to me by athletes. Apparently it's what the physio's will show you if you go there.

Lots of videos too if you google achilles tendonitis.

Thanks Robinia, I have been looking at the exercises, maybe I should do a little more than just look.
