Loss Of Smell

Just before Christmas I had one of these upper respiratory viruses that did, and is still, doing the rounds. Lots of coughing and catarrh. Probably on verge of chest infection but it sorted itself OK.
However unfortunately I lost my sense of smell and, therefore taste (in the main) and neither have returned and they were once quite good!

Can anything be done or have they gone for good? Has that area been permanenttly damaged by the virus?

You have given a good account of your problem and your assessment of you situation as described in your ultimate paragraph ie well constructed.

The chances are, that you smell has gone forever and that little can be done.

However I would try with a steroid nasal spray such as Flixonase and try this daily for a month. I think that it is available OTC.

Thanks Sqad, was hoping you saw this as resident ENT expert!

Oh dear, yes will try that. Thanks.

We take things for granted. Strange not to be able to smell my perfumes, baking, burning(!), and less pleasant aromas!
Still, hearing and eyesight very good, so have to be thankful.

Thanks for your help, in that case won't bother the GP as he is unlikely to have any solutions.
Yes, loss of smell is ordinarily not given the disability that it deserves.........anyway good luck yoga.
