My husband suffered a variation of Bells Palsy about 20 years ago. A GP wrongly diagnosed a trapped nerve in the neck which turned out to be a full blown attack of shingles. (Unknown to him a niece we had visited had been in the incubation stage of Chicken Pox). After about 4 days into the Shingles attack he was drinking a cup of tea when suddenly one side of his face became completely paralysed. He too thought it was a stroke. His GP referred him straight to hospital where he underwent some rather unpleasant "electric shock" treatment which nevertheless cured the paralysis within a couple of days.
sherrardk. I had a Bells Palsy attack 4 years ago. I had seen my gp about a rash on my shoulder which he diagnosed as shingles. Just a few days later the right side of my face completely drooped with numbness of my tongue and lips (lots of drooling). I was sent to hospital for a ct scan just to be on the safe side and was given steroids. We have 75,000 cranial nerves in our brain and its just one nerve (The 7th) which degenerates thus causing the Palsy. Regeneration is different for everyone, for some it takes weeks, for others months and even up to 3+ years. I still get bad earache, forehead pain and if over tired my nose and eye droops. If this is you are you doing facial excercises?

Thanks for that FINA, but it is not for me - it is for my husband who has seen a specialist today. His is caused by an ear problem and he is being seen again in a fortnight. If the goo in his ears haven't cleared up by then he will have to have an operation to sort them out.
