Feel a bit bad posting this above the more serious question below, but recently I have been having loads of bits of skin coming away from my fingers below the nails. I have had a few in the past but now its happening all the time. Anyone know a) - what causes this, and b) - how to 'fix' it?

i get that when i use a well known washing up liquid, citrus one. i guess it gets trapped under my nails making that the worst place, but it does dry out all the skin on my hands to some degree. i prescribe good moisturiser and make sure it gets in under the nails.
and another thing, i dont think the site can handle too many questions like the one below, yours is a welcome relief
Sorry Treacle, normal transmission is resumed.......
Have you been using anything new to clean you/your car/bath/pet etc? It could be that you are allergic to one of the solutions that you are using.

not been using anything new, but have started using stuff again that I haven't for the past year or so I guess. I have always suffered from this a wee bit as I said but its gradually getting worse. will try the moisturising thing Treacle. Mrsbobley recommended that too but I wasn't sure about it. I also can't stop picking the skin when it hangs off so my fingers are in a bit of a state and keep bleeding. Nice, I know...
if fingers have got that bad i would avoid getting them wet as much as possible til they get better, just stick to the moisturiser and wear the marigolds, in no way does this excuse you from washing up ;-D
Not some type of fungal infection? Maybe a trip to your GP if no improvement by using moisturiser.

no lindylou, not fungal thank goodness. got some moisturising handcream at lunchtime (first time in my life I've had to buy such a thing!) so hopefully that will work.
Good Luck with the moisturiser! Keep us posted.
yo treacle, you ever heard of washing up gloves, they work!
