I had the best Afternoon Tea ever, at this place yesterday ::::::

OK...it cost nearly £17 pp but it was well worth it. I am thinking of starting up a new campaign group, to bring back the popularity of High Tea. Very popular in my youth but rare to find these days. Lets get our pinkies out !

Roast Brecon Sirloin of Beef and perl las cheese baguette
Prawn and apple cocktail
Locally made Lamb and mint faggot wrapped in puff pastry

Do you get all that for £15.50?

We go to Abergavenny for the market on a Tuesday about once a month. Looks a fantastic menu. Did you get all that for one person?

Actually, we had the Llanwenarth High Tea, for £16:90. There was so much there that we couldn't eat of all it, so they gave us (very elegant) doggy bags to take the surplus home with us !

Ratter...we had scones with what I imagine is locally-sourced clotted cream, as part of the total spread, and very nice it was as well !

Yes Caran. Its on the road to Crickhowell from Abergavenny, but quite close to Aber. To be honest, it was a bit of a struggle, as there was a lot to eat, so starve yourself !

Also, we sat down at 13:30 instead of 15:00, which they didn't seem to mind. Essential to book though. We sat in the Conservatory, with marvelous mountain and river views. Can't wait to go back !

Tea, or high tea was the last meal of the day when I was young. Adults may have had a bite of supper later, but not for us kids. Once you'd finished your tea at 5 o'clock latest, that it was it till tomorrow's breakfast. The difference between tea and high tea was that the latter included a knife and fork job.

Afternoon (high) tea isn't 'rare to find these days' - everyone's at it from the Ritz downwards. Like Ratter I prefer a simple cream tea.

Naomi...we are a bit short on Ritz's here in South Wales !

Actually, I had Afternoon Tea at the Ritz in 1988, before going to the Albert Hall to see the Bolshoi. As we walked in, a very imperious Doorman, splendidly attired, asked me whether I had a jacket or not. Well, I had a tie on but no jacket, so he produced one for me to wear. It was an awful plum shade and a size too big, but without it, we couldn't have sat down !

I remember the Tea was very good but terribly expensive and I am not sure if it was any better than what we had at the Llanwenarth Hotel, which was splendid.

Wonderful scones, and really good Bara Brith.

LOL Naomi ! But I must repeat...the quality of the food and the surroundings at the Llanwenarth couldn't be bettered. If you ever get down this side of the Severn Bridge, you could do a lot worse. The lunch menu looked good as well....maybe we will have lunch next month.

I'll bear it in mind, but not for tea. I find the whole faddy concept of 'high tea' pretentious. I've had tea at the Ritz too, but I've just realised you said 1988. Clearly a memorable event for you.

This looks very similar to what we had on Thursday, and certainly no better.
But the Ritz are charging £50:00 ! I realise comparisons may be difficult but I know where the better value is located. The Ritz doesn't have the marvelous view of the Brecon Beacons that we had, although the Albert Hall would be a bit of a trek afterwards !

Actually, I think it was 1989, now I come to think about it.

The comparisons are obvious. I’d hazard a guess that the overheads at the Ritz are rather more - not least the cost of providing jackets for people who arrive inappropriately attired. ;o)

I was in Blackpool tower last week watching some ballroom dancing (if you knew us it's the last place you'd expect us to be) and they were serving up high teas. Also a hotel in Fleetwood were doing the same. We'd just had fish and chips though so weren't hungry:-)
