I think it depends on the circumstances of the incident for which 'forgiveness' is being offered, and who is offering it.
Distance makes forgiveness far easier - football managers think Ched Evans is more deserving of a football career than his victim.
I am not a sports fan, but as a member of society, I believe redemption should be offered where possible - but the notion of 'forgiving' someone because he is good at sport is not something I would condone.

It's not really surprising that many professional footballers behave off the pitch the way they do. The game is infested with probably the highest proportion of cheats of just about any game. On the `very rare occasions I catch a glimpse of "the beautiful game" I rarely fail to witness the spectacle of a player being blown off his feet by the draught of an opponent passing six feet or more away. Immediately he rolls over half a dozen times, screaming in agony and clutching what must surely be a broken leg. Then up he leaps to remonstrate with the referee for failing to award his team a penalty. Last week we saw Mr Rooney remonstrating and physically intimidating the referee when a decision went against him.
Of course when allowed to behave in this way without proper sanction it is little wonder that they come to believe they are fireproof when it comes to their behaviour off the pitch.
