another year on the clock. I'm starting to feel old now. My better half bought me a piece of meteorite and picture of Jupiter. She says she will stick the picture in front of the telescope objective lens when i'm getting fed up of not being able to see anything. So simple yet so thoughtful

An amusing little incident the other day. I was at the concert hall and it turned out a neighbour of mine was there. So he introduced me to a few of his friends. One of them was asking me what I did, and I told him I studied physics. "Oh," he said, "so you must know all about that, erm, what was it, the boson, somebody's boson?"
"Do you mean this guy's boson?" I said, pointing out Peter Higgs as he walked past.

That was at the interval. Earlier on I'd already spotted him in the audience, and then I was aware that he was hanging around in the bar. So I sort of knew that it was a possibility. However, the timing could not have been more perfect, as Professor Higgs popped up on my shoulder at precisely the right time for me to say that. And then the double-take from my neighbour's friend was worth it.
I think a few minutes earlier I'd said "Good evening" directly to the professor, but either I said it too quietly or he decided not to reply. Makes for a less exciting anecdote, that bit :P
