Hello, I work full time, and my mother has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer. (she is elderley and has had a good life - but it is still so sad). I am her only daughter and live only ten minutes from her, but I have mine own family also and the only driver. My brother who rarely visits lives over two hours away.

So my question is I am going to be spending more and mort my mums clain carers allowance?

I do unsociable hours at my job with start time at 02:45, but I finish at 11:45, so after that I will be going to my mums and doing all her chores that need doing, whilst looking after her, so basically I will be there nearly full time - can I claim? but I will be still doing my full time job (40 hours per week).

The company I work for has offered to let me go part time, down to 20 hours a week, but the money loss will be a lot, and I have all the normal bills mortgage etc.. Would the carers allowance make up the short fall of my 20 less hours a week - or would I well short?

Any help would be helpful.

Thanking you all in advance

1) Carers allowance is reduced when you earn over a certain amount - i think unless you get far less than the minumum wage you probably wont be entitled if you are working full time 2) no, it won't make up a shortfall of (presumably) 20 ish hours a week - i think it's something like £60 a week t the full rae

I can't really help you JBW and I'm really sorry about your Mum x The link below might help though

JBW, sorry to hear your bad news.

Ask your mothers Doctors surgery or yours for the best way forward to your problem, they usually have someone with all the departments you can get help from, and there is a lot of help out there.

Good Luck.
JBW...When my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer the benefits office were superb. Your mum's GP or the hospital should give you the departments to contact.

I can honestly say that they were very sensitive and made everything as easy as possible.

I'm so sorry about your mum xx

Thank you all for your help, and kind words, I have an appointment at the hospice next week, and will discuss it with them, as mum's GP is going to be there. Thank you all again
Your mum also can get Attendance Allowance. If she doest at under The Special Rules. It speeds things up considerably. I am sure the Benefits Agency will be very helpful. You could phone them about a possible claim for carers allowance. Citizens Advice Bureau are an excellent source of information too
Sorry, sticky keys on lappy. If she does not already get Attendance Allowance claim under Special Rules
