I want to apply for a job my company is advertising, but the problem is that I have only just been given the job I'm in now! I've been in my department for nearly 4 years, and have done various jobs. I was seconded to the job I'm doing now a year ago, and last month I officially got the job.

But I want more regular hours (job i'm doing is shifts), and the job i've seen advertised seems right up my street.

Problem is that when I apply, I have to copy my boss in, so he's going to know I'm looking for something else. I know he'll be annoyed because he's just given me my current job.

How do I go about this without p1ssing my boss off?!

The only way round it is to be honest, try the old 'i feel like its time to move on' line. or would't it be an option to go to regular hours where you are? you don't know if you don't ask
have a quiet word with your boss first. he's more likely to be p1ssed off if he finds out about it at the same time as everyone else. don't make him feel as if you're asking his permission. let him know what you're about to do and why. tell him if you don't get it it won't affect your commitment to the role he's given you but you feel you need to go for this opportunity. don't get into a huge discussion with him.

Just want to say thanks to you both for your help. I wrote him an email in the end saying something along the lines of I'm still 100% committed to my current job, but am keeping an eye open for jobs within the company with better working hours.

To my surprise he emailed back saying he was "sad and speachless" that i was thinking of leaving, and that he puts me "at the top of the class in ability and personailty" in my dept!!! Guilt trip or what?!!
