I think the sensor is a small brass item screwed into the cylynder head just below the thermostat with a single wire going to it.
If you pull off that wire and hold it to a good earth point on the body you should get a high reading on the temperature guage. If not the guage is most likely faulty. If so it's probably the sender.
The sender come out with a 1/2" spanner and a bit of wd40 a replacement is about �15 from ford or about half that from an independent.
I'd advise investing a few quid in a Haynes manual
That's interesting because I picked up a 1.1 95 fiesta recently and replaced the tem sensor because it was reading so low I thought there was a fault.
Not much difference I reckon they're all fitted with the same radiator and cooling whatever the engine so the smaller ones run cool.
If you replace the sensor spray it with wd40 a couple of days before you remove it and you'll find you want an imperial half inch spanner for it (Uncle Henry's still in the dark ages)
