Hi. A Lithuanian that I work with, who doesn't speak very good English has told me he has been contacted to do Jury Duty. He has been in Scotland since 2006, is in his 50's, and married to a Scottish woman now. It doesn't seem right to have such a person deciding somebody's fate when he has difficulty underdstanding basic english. I personally don't think it's right!

I wonder if his wife speaks Lithuanian or they don't talk much.
He needs to contact the court and tell them that he is not fluent in English. He will then be excused.

I cant understand why he was asked to do it in the first place.
He could have used the language problem when asked any reason why he couldn't attend when he got the papers but mustn't have understood!
I think they just select people of the electoral roll- I don't think they make assumptions about people's language skills

seriously, half of "Native" uk people don't understand the language very well, so i don't see it makes much of a difference

I don't know, they come over here, they take our jobs, now they want our Jury Service!
Hang on a minute, they can have that bit!!!
I'm sure if he's struggling they'll provide an interpreter. It's what we do.
^ Interpeters are not provided for jury members, only for defendants and witnesses. Not understanding English is a valid reason to be excused jury duty. He should phone the no on the jury duty letter and get someone to explain that he has language problems.
