Diabetes Diet

I am a 70+ year old widower, who as just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As my blood suugar was found to be high I have been put on medication 2 tabs of Metformin a day I have also been adviced to diet wich means lessd fat [frying] less sugar more fruit.] My question/prblem is as I am a recent widower living alone is organising meals/diet on a daily basis. one can find very appealing things to eat and cook but what does people eat on a regular basis I can cook a little but what do I cook?.

Hi there grandfatherd------Would imagine you are feeling a bit anxious about your recent diagnosis.Well there is good news, you have the best kind of diabetes to have.
Very common in senior people and controllably to a large degree by the food you eat.
As ethandron has said you need to speak to a dietician, does your Gp have one?
As you have access to a computer if you look you will find a lot of help on food for type 2 diabetes., and some recipes.
There is also a magazine called Balance , published by the diabetic assoc. This also has some recipes and loads of info.
Basically the fundementals are --lean meat, grill not fry. remove skin from fowl, skimmed ilk, plenty of fruit and veggies.Careful with tinned soups and readt meals.

just a couple of points:
balance is published by diabetes uk, which used to be called the diabetic association, and is a very useful magazine. your diabetes nurse should have one called diabetes for beginners (or something like that) which is full of very useful information for newly diagnosed diabetics.
just be aware that fruit and veg also contain carbohydrates, so whilst it's good to eat fruit and veg, too much of the wrong ones (particularly fruit) can cause raised blood sugar levels. this is more important for a type 2, as a type 1 can adjust their insulin to compensate.
also useful would be to buy yourself a book about type 2 diabetes (or borrow one from the library) which will explain things to you and you'll have it to hand to refer to, it's quite a lot to get your head round when you're newly diagnosed.

Google Wiltshire Farm Foods. They provide meals to your door, they even have a section for diabetics, low fat etc. I know 2 people who have them, one with type 2 diabetes and they say they are lovely and not expensive and so many different dishes including desserts. They come with instructions for microwaving or cooking in a conventional oven so I'm sure you would be able to find something to suit.

For breakfast start off with grapefruit juice if you can abide it (no sugar added mind), if not a 100% orange juice, then porridge - this really fills you up for the morning. You can add a spoonful of honey but no jam.
For lunch: A good bowl of soup and a savoury sandwich go down well (ham, cheese, tuna, chicken, beef etc). Check on sugar contents, I make my own soups.
Afternoon: Have a fruit snack with a slice of bread beforehand, of anything other than bananas and grapes.
Dinner: Have either fish (baked in foil?), meat, omelette, with a veg. dish I have a tendancy of making a low-fat gratin but you could open a tin of veg. making sure it doesn't contain sugars. Frozen veg. is best for this. Add pasta, rice, potatoes or just bread if you prefer. For dessert, try greek yoghourt with a bit of fruit.
Home-made cheese scones are a lovely treat and no sugar and little fat.
