Poached Eggs.......why do you have to add Vinegar to the water before dropping in eggs ?????

Just noticed , you say ''dropping in eggs'' do not 'drop' them, crack the shell and gently lower them into the water. Dropping them even from an inch or two will seperate the yolk from the white.
