Vanishing Cursor

Evening. I have an entry level Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1 and Firefox.

Earlier this afternoon the pointer on-screen stopped responding to the touch pad and has now, apparently, vanished altogether.

Can anybody offer a clue as to what's gone wrong and how it might be rectified?

You can enable/disable the touchpad by holding down the Fn button and pressing the F6 button.
