I am currently in a long distance relationship. I live in the UK and My wife lives in New Mexico. We have been doing this for about 5 months now. We try to talk to eachother by phone and email frequently, but I feel like we are still missing out on the little things that I think are important in a relationship, such as just hanging out, playing games, etc. Does anyone know of any games that we can play on the phone or by email. I was thinking that we could play email hangman. Any other ideas? Also, any advice on how to make the best of a long distance relationship based on other's experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For a start, use instant messaging rather than email. Then you can have the nearest thing to a real-time conversation online. I assume you use webcams which I would have thought were essential in this situation.

No, we don't have web cams. In fact she does not have an internet connection at home. She can't afford it. So she only has access to email at work, and because of the time difference (7 hours), it would be difficult to have a real time conversation online.

correspondence chess - one move per day, by e mail. Just set up a board at both ends. If you don't know how to play, it could be fun to learn together. Or not.

E mail 20 questions / animal - veg - mineral type of word games

Alternative definitions, eg Questionable - to interrogate a cow's husband. One per day each, best one gets a point.

E mail story additionals, alternate adding a sentence to a story you create

When will you be reunited?

Thanks Trotbot, those are some good ideas.

nuoyg, we will probably not be reunited permanently until September of 2007. She will be visiting me here for 6 weeks this summer and I visit her during the holidays in December and January.

I was interested to see that you say you use e mail and phone. Do you use SKYPE? For those of you who do not know what it is, it is a completely free way of contacting your friends/family through your PC. It is soo easy to download and all you need are speakers or, like me, some headphones (Amazon 25).

My children are all over England and Europe and we can chat forever with no cost involved (providing that they are on Skype too) If you call someone who is not on Skype there is a very small charge. (you simply pay by card and it is shown in euros, I paid just ten euros when I started eight months ago and still have nine left!!)

you can the whole family or group on line together so you can organise things and do a mass catchup..My friend whose sister is in South Africa comes over each Sunday to talk to her family.............
