historically, the "Irish Mile" was a measurement of distance that was in use in Ireland but (like so many other miles) diverted from the English standard mile (the "Statute Mile" set down in 1593). In Elizabethan times, four Irish miles were reputed to add up to five English miles. In the 17th century, the Irish Mile was 2,240 yards or 2,048 metres.
