Looks as though I should strike 'Bollywood film' of my to-do list.
Good idea Sandy
i can remember back in the 1960s when we used to visit grandma and grandad in todmorden the drive home took us through Rochdale (pre M62) and there was a cinema there that always had films on with Indian actors pictures on huge posters, we thought Rochdale was very foreign then.
Bride and prejudice, me and some friends went to see this when it came out in cinema. It was fun!
I'd never had a bagel until a month ago....I didn't like it. I've never seen a Bollywood musical but it's on my list
note the immense length of some Bollywood films.

Bride and Prejudice was fun, though fairly westernised.
all I can remember is a fat lady running round a tree, hugging it and singing I fell sleep after that.

You didn't miss much, Dee Sa. It's over when the fat lady sings :-)
Of the little I've seen what sticks with me is the heavy eyebrows, moustaches and stylised fighting.
The male actors are pretty much the same.
spoilt the end now sandy so i won't bother watching it
I would suggest that this mdium would be difficult to assimilate with our Western experience.

Bollywood films follow a very styalised format that would look very unusual to us - the body language, costumes, music, plot lines and unspoken cultural boundaries would all be a complete mystery, making any attempt at following the plot and story virtually impossible.

On that basis, one would looke exactly like another, and without at least a basic understanding of the style, it would be difficult to judge the merits of one over another, so little would be gained by watching what is perceived as a successful and popular movie, over one which was considered poor and uninteresting.

I watched a friend's child dancing with The Birmingham Ballet once, and half-way through the performance, I realised i had no cultural reference points what ever to guide me as to whether what i was watching was a breath-taking spectacle, or a load of pretentious tripe!

I refered to my friend's child's teacher who was sitting next to me, who confirmed that it was indeed seriously good - which I was glad to hear.
when I worked in Dubai the houseboy and the "helpers" where I worked all believed that every Bollywood/Hindi type movie was absolutely true nothing could shake their faith they were 100% true [cue for heads to go woggle woggle from side to side].
i think these films, rock star, devdas, Aashiqui2, Dil se ..etccomes under this categorie. And you can watch these films on http://biscoot.com/ one of the best Indian onlime music portal.
