I've done this on 3 houses in the past whilst installing CCTV systems. The owners of the properly couldn't afford to replace the outside bell box so told me to improvise. It's one of the cheapest methods and it also make it look like you've upgraded your alarm system. I've never had any issues what so ever.
You could paint it and put a new sticker on it.

The additional casing around the box isn't going to make a great deal of difference to the amount of sound coming from the bell/siren. Not that it matters because 98% of the time no one does anything when they see a house alarm going off anyway. Apart from take to it with a hammer because they are sick to death with the noise pollution.
