We are shortly going to the evening reception of my ex sister in laws wedding (we have kept friendly over the years and she is a God parent to my kids)
Do we need to take a gift - not sure of the etiquette. X

I would give something as she is your children's godmother. I don't think there is an etiquette as such.
if you are invited either to day do or night do out of courtesy a small gift would be nice - when it happens to me which is pretty frequently - I would spend between £25-£40. Perhaps a nice vase, mirror or a clock.
btw ^^^ I never went to the do's but I still bought.
We put money in a card. Never buy gifts.
i would give something like a Markies gift voucher
ask your ex sister in law if she has a list or if they want vouchers .
Why not just money? Buying a voucher limits them.

The last wedding we went to all the money they received paid for their honeymoon spendies...
I have always believed that if you are invited to a wedding, you should give a gift, whether you go or not.
The size of the gift is entirely up to you, but I like to try to get the couple something from their list if they have one. If they don't have a list then Amazon vouchers are a pretty good standby.

Thank you all for your good advice.
I have found a lovely wooden photo frame, which I am having personalised for them.
