What does it take to drop a dress size?

About 9 months ago I changed my eating habits and am happy to have lost 21lbs.

But despite losing a stone and a half, I am still in the same size clothes. Ok they are a little baggier but I have just tried on a couple of tops in one size down and although they do go on, they are a little tight.

So what does it take to drop a dress size?

To drop a dress size simply go to a different dress shop.

The sizing of women's dresses is purely a comparitive rather than an absolute affair. In shop A 30 inch waist is (say) size 14. In shop B a 30 inch waist is (say) size 12. So, go to shop B and, hey presto! you've dropped a dress size!

The sizing of women's dresses in arbitrary meaningless size numbers is a farce.
The voice of experience there from NJ...

But seriously, I've heard rumours of the same. Size 16 in one shop -- or one particular dress - is size 14 in another, and size 18 in a third.
Well done on the weight loss but where did you lose it from? Why was the top tight - boobs maybe or arms, which don't lose so much weight? 21lbs is a lot to lose without going down a size. NJ is also right, sizes vary a lot from shop to shop.
All the above is true and well done on the weight loss but remember your ribcage, Shoulders and to a large extent your bust will stay the same.

It's really psychological to feel happy buying a smaller size, just be proud of the result of your endeavours.
Marks and Spencer is amazing for this. I am three different sizes of their jeans, sometimes depending on which colour of the same style they are. And do not get me started on bras.

Thanks for all your encouraging replies. I know different shops have different sizing, the tops were a little tight across my tummy really. I am proud to have got this far, but like Mamy says, I think it's a psycological thing to get the smaller size.

Will carry on anyway, still quite a bit to go, I am not dieting as I know they never last but just tweeking little things and not eating so many cakes!
Not sure of your age Millie but peri and post menopause, ALL ladies tend to round out a bit over the stomach. The other thing to suggest is maybe some exercise to improve your stomach muscle tone?

woofgang, I am post menopausal so I suppose I should expect a little spread.
I have a degenerative spine condition (among other things) so excercise is limited but I am trying.

I know how you are feeling.. I have lost over a stone since about september last year...not eating bread and eating better..but it is only now I am beginning to see a difference in cloths fitting.. Just today I put on a jacket and it was far to big for me... you could really see it..But other things in the same size are a bit tight.? No one seems to notice the weight loss either until I show them,,,,mind you this is my husband I am talking about.lol... When he saw the jacket on me he said he hadnt noticed I had lost the weight... Keep going it will start to show soon.xx
For your own benefit keep a check on your weight and ignore labels. Labels are designed to sell clothes.
From a man's point of view, I don't know or care what number is printed on the label inside your clothes.

If you have lost 21 lbs I bet you look fantastic now, even if you are wearing the same sized clothes.
Hopkirk... what a lovely man you are. Hope you have someone in your life that deserves you. x

AWww thank you all for your kind words

Lilacben, I sympathise with you too.
No one has noticed my weight loss either! I suppose with your loved ones, they see you every day so don't notice, bet if you met a friend you hadn't seen for a while they would.
I have clothes in my wardrobe from a size 18 to 24 and they all fit!
i dont know if you go to a gym but using weights helps tone and you lose inches rather than weight. if you just look up exercise that tone, there's stuff you can do at home. i prefer the gym as i jave a ttrainer who works out plans for me and kicks my *** when i need it...
Like Kath says. I was trying on skirts the other day for my holiday. 3 different sizes and they all fit me.
H&M is quite mean with their sizing
Wallis are really generous :-)
ummm, Oh damn.! lol x
