Hi Builder - hope you are out there - not a serious thing.

Anyway some years ago I decorated my living room and unfortunately removed a very good fireplace tile and wood to MDF fireplace The electric fire that came with it never ever worked although lit up, but even at that I can't stand the fire being lit up as it is fan-powered and against MDF makes a noise. - anyway I am and always wanting a little light in the middle of my living room and again the noise drives me nuts.

1. I have started to unassemble it - hopefully to get rid of the fan and just get the light. The heat (don't care about it.)

Anyway is there a fire out there that I can buy that can flicker the light and maybe throw out some heat. I would be happy with the flicker (but no fan assisted. Thanks for any advice.

A friend of mine keeps a tumble of warm-coloured fairy lights in her grate - it gives a lovely glow, and you can make them 'flicker' with the settings.

before i read your links - I unassembled it to rip out the fan - the wee fans of years ago were like a spinning wheel and you could just take it off the pin - however when I looked inside this it was a full elongated wheel. Couldn't get it out so cut it off - don't care. What is the point of a fire if it can't be lit or heat comfortably. ok builder will read your links and thanks for taking the trouble for me.

thanks for the links but i have an MDF fire surround so fire must sit inside - the first link - some of the fires look like mine - again it is the fan that makes the ribbons look like fire and unfortunately the fan rattling against the surround would be just the same. I think the best thing would be for me to actually go to an electrical shop and have a look myself - they are expensive tho in the shop but anyway thanks again.

just looked at the links - as I said some look very like mine ie fan but how does the LED work. thanks

Fans shouldn't be noisy these days, Jenny. I would go and listen to some in action first. There may be a problem with yours that is unusual. Anyway, there's no need to remove a fan... simply disconnect it (safely please!)

LEDs are just diodes that give off light. Same as any other bulb, but consume around a tenth of the power.

ok thanks builder - just got back to this - unfortunately I have ripped the whole lot out - or rather disconnected it. The thing has never worked - think the LED may work.
