Plants fruit to sow seed & perpetuate. Your tree seems unthreatened (too healthy) so is happy to grow. Neglect it, leave it thirsty & threatened for its life and it is forced to fruit.

Dear Mrs Plum I'm sure you understand that your dear daughter will not bear fruit until she is much older.

I am going to suggest a lack of pollinating insects. I don't support Tambo's theory as a plant will only flower and fruit when conditions are good. If the plant becomes dry it will protect itself by dropping the blossoms and fruit. What else is planted near the plum tree? Is it kept well watered during blossom time?
