The old pc is defunct - the disc reader down and then the wifi went.

New Asus - Windows on old card (7) - 2 problems

1. Cursor seems to bounce around, going backwards ever so often

2. Open Word files and things are readable, however won't let me type.....

Thanks.....

Just to clarify - you have a new computer?

What do you mean by Windows on old card?

When you say you can read Word files, does it say anything along the top like read-only or protected? If so is there an Enable Editing option? If so click it.

I didn't want to use W8 - they took the disc out of the old pc and installed it on the new pc - until W10 comes in....

I can open my word files but can not type or edit etc......
Question Author
nothing about read only at the top.....
DTC, do you mean they've taken your old hard drive and put it into the new PC?
Question Author
yes, Builder as a stop=gap to W10 comes in
Question Author
with a rewiring of drivers etc.....
Swapping hard drives isn't quite as simple as just physically exchanging them.
It's normal to have to go into the BIOS of the computer and change some of the settings.

Any idea if they did that?

Asus to Asus by the way - done by Truro Computer Services
Question Author
Yes....lots, about an hour to do......but its left me with locked documents and this annoying cursor 'bounce'
A can of worms here, DTC. Hindsight is wonderful, but it would have been much better to have left the HD alone, uninstalled W8, and installed W7.

Easier still.... sell you a W7 machine.

As it is, I can only guess that the mouse problem is driver related.

Have a look at ... start/control panel/mouse/hardware/driver properties. Does it say the mouse is working Ok?
Question Author
yes it says ok......
The trouble is ... often, the system only "thinks" it's Ok. You could be really brave and uninstall the mouse driver............ reboot, and see if it picks up a generic Microsoft mouse driver.

Other simple possibilities.......

mouse sensitivity settings
optical mouse on dodgy surface
USB problem ......... try alternative ports

Clutching at straws here, I'm afraid. I just hope one of the usual tech suspects may see this and offer much better than I. It's one of those niggles that really need someone to sit in front of it and try a few things.

I think a return to the shop is called for.

So do I, Builder - the Word is perhaps the most annoying as I can't write tonight - even then the cursor may bounce (5 times in typing this)....Thanks though!
Ok. I'm sorry, but I thought I'd have a go. It's often something trivial.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Word problem stems directly from the mouse one.
Question Author
Neither would I, never mind my fat fingers!
Question Author
Thanks to all, esp The Builder....

The Word problem disappeared when the Truro PC guy re-positioned the cursor drive, something that he had missed. ADblock took a minute to fix and Firefox, well that I'll do, just unload and reload - not that I use it much.
