Charity Shop Bargains.

Do you buy much from charity shops?What are your latest or best bargains you have bought from them?

I once bought a horrible looking wall clock for $20; however, inside the case was a German Hermle Westminster chime movement which is worth close to $350.

No bargains, but lots of paperback books.
You sometimes see on TV antique programmes people who have bought items for 50p which turn out to be worth hundreds. They must go to a better class of charity shop.

When I was working I had to pass about 4 charity shops to get to work, I would go in on way to work and on my way home !!! I got quite obsessed. I did get a few bargains to be honest but it became too much. On the up side the shops do get most of my shopping mistakes, impulse buys, that sort of thing.

Funny you should say that Sandy. Friend told me they had a better class of charity shop in St Andrews than here in Dundee. Must be trying to entice all those rich golfers lol.

Recently my sister bought me an out of print book for $2. I checked it out on eBay, and it's listed at $95US...And people are bidding on it!

The bigger charity shops are now employing valuers to glean out the good stuff and they sell it on EBay. If you donate stuff it goes to a central point to be sorted not straight back on the shelves like it used to. The best place for bargains are car boot sales.

B00, re Rtaxron’s post. I’d be peeved if I found stuff I’d donated to charity was being taken home by the shop workers. Fair enough if they pay for it but if I donate something to charity I want the proceeds to help the charity – not to be taken by the staff as some sort of bonus.

I might buy a book from a charity shop, but I’d never buy clothes. I have a real aversion to second hand clothes. A throw back to a poor childhood I think.

One thing I noticed on my travels through charity shops is that certain charity's will sell books for 50p , good books by the way and other shops don't sell a book for less than £2.50p. Needless to say did not buy any of those.

I know a woman who buys from a charity shop and then sometimes takes the item back for a refund ! don't know how she has the bare face cheek to do this to a charity shop and she isnt exactly hard up either.

The only thing I have ever bought from a charity shop was a pair of cerise sling backs that I wanted to wear to a fancy dress party. They were a snip at £3 and I binned them after I wore them. I donated/am donating virtually the whole contents of my Mum`s house to a local charity shop that was affiliated with the organisation that took her to her many hospital appointments when I couldn`t do it. They said that my/her donations have made a huge difference to them and that is nice.

Dee Sa, hearing you say about the lady who repeated took things back to a charity shop for a refund, reminded me of the time i was looking for a black cardigan for me to wear at a funeral. I went in the shop and asked for a black cardigan and the woman said no, they had to stop selling the black ones because so many people came and bought one, used it just for the day at a funeral and then returned it to the shop for a full refund. I couldnt believe it! How have they got the cheek!

My cousin bought me a pair of Clark's shoes from a charity shop. Unworn for £3. She really liked them and they were in my size. I've never actually bought anything myself.

I have a big bag ready for them - lotions, potions, presents from christmas, brand new calculator, cuppla belts 2 pair of brand new tights -box of fancy glass wih a miniature BOTTLE of blossom hill -3 tops brand new electric iron which I don't think they will take. ladies wallet.

btw I have finally found a person for my Kindle - it is my girlfriend's brother - he asked how much - I am giving it to him. As it it will be USED. It is lying in he drawyer. Am warning them plenty please no lotions or potions or flowers - please nothing. nothing.
