My husband has said we have to lower our food bill every week as he feels we are sending to much. There are 3 of us my husband myself and a 2 year old. He said I could easily manage on 50.00 per week. I however think he is taking the p*** does anyone think this is realistic?

If you have an Aldi or a Lidl near you - they are excellent value for all basic stuff. I get all the loo rolls, cleaning stuff etc. Have a wander round and compare prices to other supermarkets.
Give the p*** taker beans on toast every night for a month, that should do it.

i think 50 is adequate. i spend 10 per week. but then it's only for two and i make everything from scratch. we don't eat meat though.
i spend 70 per week every week, i go to asda as i tried aldi and most of it ended up in the bin, it was yuck! There are 3 of us but only 2 of us eat proper food as my son is on prescription milk, i must say i like hammerman like to make sure my cupboards and freezer are stocked though, i could probably spend less but then my partner eats lots of snacks during the day (as do i now i am preggers!)

If you rely on lots of ready made and pre-processed meals then your expenditure will be higher. (The food manufacturers & retailers have to make a profit from somewhere). Cooking your own food from scratch, making double portions and freezing them and using fresh vegetables rather than frozen can help cut your food bill. If you have a garden why not start growing your own tomatoes, runner beans and salad crops. It's surprising how much you can grow in a small space if you keep the soil well fertilised. Also, I'd be tempted to give you husband your 50 housekeeping allowance and suggest he does it himself for a fortnight. It's not just food that eats up the budget. It's all the ancilliaries like washing machine powder, toilet rolls, etc. Do you cook fresh food for your child? Buying pre-prepared stuff will work out really expensive. On the other hand, if you work, time can sometimes balance out money. But give him the chance to prove it can be done !
