It's okay, I've just realised what it is. It was seeing it in a straight line that made me suddenly realise.

happens to all of us - I occasionally use my dad's old crossword solver machine, and often just tap in the letters to see that the answer's obvious without waiting for the (elderly and slow) machine to do its work...
