It will still be valid when you return to UK so you should be ok.

thanks retrochic,i tried to ring the passport office but was put on hold for ages...
I think the answer is you will be OK
You are going to have to renew your passport anyway, so why not do it before you go and save the mither. They will backdate it (or frontdate it!)

i just might do that tilly...
My passport came back in a week.
I would seriously check out passport office web site now. Some countries do not accept a passport with any thing less than 6 months expiry date left after departure from country visited. Israel is one and there are quite a few others.

Having skimmed through this link it is a myth, apparently, that 6 months is required so ignore previous post. Read this link it will tell you what you want to know.
Passport validity

//Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay; you do not need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this.

The Italian authorities have confirmed they will accept British passports extended by 12 months by British Embassies and Consulates under additional measures put in place in mid-2014.//

Just copied and pasted from official FCO site with regards to ITALY. You are OK with your passport to travel. Bon Voyage. I am off tomorrow :-)
