Druuring the "what do you do" sequence one (lady) contestant had recently retired from 20 odd years in the Royal Navy. Her experiences therein included being a "steward" at Chequers, looking after the PMs there.

Interesting that defence of the realm includes pandering to the requirements of PMs at their country retreat.

But hardly good use of the Defence Budget.

I believe 'Steward' in this case means a personal guard (like a bodyguard) The army navy and air force took turns to provide the Stewards, it was considered a great honour to be asked to do it.

*During
maybe 'steward' is a code word for female body guard
When you're in the forces you are there 24/7 so it doesn't matter what you are doing, the pay is still the same at the end of the month. I was in the RAF during the sixties when there were many 'Ban the bomb' marches and demonstrations, we were frequently sent to both British and American Bases for the weekend to help defend them, there was no extra pay or time off.
Oh, gosh.....we may have met then, Vulcan......☺
She recently retired from 20 odd years in the Royal Navy so that makes her over qualified in my eyes. I'm guessing she's getting on a bit and does this part time. What's wrong with that?
gosh yes broseph she must be at least 38 good grief! BTW do you know what 'retired' means in the job sense?
There's nothing wrong with any of it, the realm includes the PM. if there weren't so many people not working and claiming benefits then we also needn't waste so much of the public purse on administering it. Nit picking for the sake of it IMO.

You could continue stalking me from thread to thread or just answer the op like the rest of us.
That must be a first - something interesting on Pointless.
Thanks eddie for that I thought it might mean body guard.
She didn't look very fit to me. Maybe she just stood in the doorway.
Tilly -she had 'recently retired' she could have been a steward 10 years ago. Mind you I've seen some female bouncers and the best they could do in a fight was sit on the opponent they certainly could not chase them down the road ;-)
I think they also acted as a 'butler' and served food etc but the real reason was security .
Exactly, Retro!
To be fair, being Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is a fairly important job.
Why not, ex-servicemen/women are preferred in posts like that. They know how to behave and stand on ceremony.

What on earth has benefit claiming got to do with it ? Nit picking for the sake of it IMO.
