Download Speed On Imac 10.5.8
_My dear ol' Mum knocking 90 but using above iMAC for emails and writing documents. (Wonder if I'll be able to do so, IF I reach that age...!) For ever asking for assistance with Mail: once written, she cannot send any via BT ISP. Feedback via her vague descriptions = impossible to visualise and react to. Apparently, being asked repeatedly for her BT email password. But the gobbledegook error-message was a dead-end. An attempt at starting iMAC's browser = Safari showed that no contact could be established. My game mother did get BT's HomeHub to re-start. Slow in re-establishing all services. But Safari, then Mail, worked.
__Alas, only for a short while. It seemed that the HomeHub time and again crashed. A few months back, I visited my mother and phoned BT, going through three "experts", before their testing the HH found something that resulted in my being informed that an update of this hardware would be sent.
_Returning again to my mother, to find NO such BT replacement/modernised HH. (1) Has anybody had such similar experience? (2) Can anybody please advise on a SW for testing download speeds? One can count NOT bytes, but bits.__**__P.S. My situation is critical, in that I live abroad. So, would ideally like to do a download speed test before contacting BT ASAP. Many thanks in anticipation.

There is a reset button on the HH. And a pinpoint to do a factory reset.
If you have a smartphone have you tried that in your mums house. That will determine whether the problem is on the computer or the router. If you cannot connect with your phone, get BT to replace the HH.

Lets check the setup of the hub first.
The hub should be connected to the phone socket via a filter - so it should be like
socket -> filter -> hub and phone
Doe she have any more phone sockets with anything plugged in eg. phone, sky etc.
If so these will need a filter as well between them and the socket.
