Copying CDs with Roxio

I just bought a new Dell Dimension PC that came with Roxio. I copied a CD last week but it won't let me anymore. It doesn't even seem to recognise that there is a disk in there. Any ideas?

roxio is pooey, i had sooooo many problems with it. download Nero off the web and use it instead (it's free) http://www.nero.com/en/index.html

downloaded it fine, thanks. Still doesn't recognise that there's a CD in the bloody machine!!!!! I have dusted the CD to see if that makes a difference, but it hasn't

errrr.... shout "work you ba$t@ard" at it. If it still refuses to cooperate then throw it out of the window. (Vivien Basterd [young ones] method of fixing the video recorder). But seriously. Are you saying it won't recognise ANY CD? if yes then perhaps it's back to the shop time with a stroppy "you sold me a pile of poo" look, i'm afraid. If no then it's the CD itself that's unreadable - try putting the CD into the CD-writer rather than the CD-ROM player, to see if the machine will read it then (the CD writer happily runs as a CD player too). apologies in advance for any patronisingness here as you level of knowledge is unknown

Well I thought about kicking it, but as it's new I think I ought to go and have a moan (ie scream) to Dell. It's only got one DVD/CDRW space and no CDs work in there at all, and they did before so I know that's not the prob. Thanks anyway.

Definitely a faulty drive - back to the shop (unless you feel qualified enough to poke around inside and check cables etc). PS for 20 quid or so you could have a CDROM fitted too so you can copy Audio CD's if you wanted to, not that Darth ever does that no thankyou as he doesn't want to get in trouble with the Police.......

You could try this: D/click 'My Computer', d/click 'Control Box, d/click 'System'. On the 'Device Manager' tab click the + sign against 'CDRom'. I don't know how many you have but each one will be listed. Highlight the first one and click 'Properties' then 'Settings'. Check whether the correct letter is in the 'Start drive letter' and 'End drive letter', if not amend it. Whilst there you can see if auto start is enacted under 'Options'. Do this for each of your drives then reboot.

Just thought. If you wanna make CD copies you could do a lot worse than get Clone CD; it's free from www.clonecd.net but you'd better hurry coz I think they're closing due to some piracy laws.

Well just come off the phone to Dell. Only took half an hour for them to decide the drive was faulty and I hadn't just put the CD in upside down. They're coming to pick it up on Monday....why they can't just stick a new one in here is beyond me!!
