NO, nowt is free in this day and age, and Genealogy Sites are the same.

They say its free, and after finding someone with your name they want a payment, then another, and another, and another.

I found somebody local to do mine going back to the 17th Century, and well worth the £70.
www.familysearch.org - good site provided by the LDS and deals with bmds (not so good on the deaths or recent stuff tho).

www.freebmd.org.uk - free BMD records from 1837. Not a complete database yet tho..
www.freereg.org.uk - free parish register records - again not complete.
www.freecen.org.uk - free census returns - again not complete

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ - if you get a "hit" some are free and some are pay for.

Try good old google - particularly if you know the geographical area you are researching - there is load of info out there.

Try local family hsitory sites and local record offices as well.
