Unnecessary And Dramatically Overdone Apologies On The Net

I like to have a read around and recently I've came across many unnecessary and dramatically overdone apologies for what can only be described as the smallest atoms weight of wrong doing and then someone who has had the gall and gumption enough to say what they believed in then totally retracts their comment often without the op or another poster having said a thing and then backtracks and starts an emotional and long winded apology cue metaphoric back pats, hugs and tears which as a bystander is frankly embarassing.

What's up with that? Hormones? Drunk? No conviction or belief in themselves? I remember one time in a news section somewhere where one guy retracted his original comment apologising to the other then the other to the apologee then there was an awkward silence which led me to believe that had this occurred in real life and they were face to face then who knows what would have happened. I had to comically break the ice saying "Shall I book you guys a room?" to which the hypnotic state broke and then it was the "Bridge of the river Kwai" with pitbulls at each others necks as usual.

Anyway so what are your thoughts on unnecessary and dramatically overdone apologies? I'm off out to the bar but am mystified and genuinely interested in this strange phenomenon.

Bye all :)

people chat on the internet in much the same way as they chat in the pub; but very often, nuances of meaning that you can pick up face-to-face get lost in print. In paritcular it's hard to pick up irony or outright joking. Sometimes people apologise for giving offence when they didn't intend to, because what they wrote didn't clearly convey what they really meant. I think apologies are often justifiable in situations like that - I usually say if I realise I've expressed myself clumsily. (But equally often I think the person who misread me is just dumb, and in that case I don't apologise.)

Are you sure that you're not in the bar already, and have been ensconced there for a while? Oh, man: why did I type that!
I agree.

Apologies on AB are by and large, meaningless and in many cases .....insulting.

One assesses the situation, formulates a reply and then if events question his/her post, there being no indication to apologise.

The majority, the vast majority of apologies on AB are meaningless, ill conceived and born out of a knee jerk reaction.
My thoughts are that "unnecessary and dramatically overdone" are just that, what/who is an "apologee" & now I can't stop whistling that damn tune...
My thoughts are the same as unnecessary and dramatically done comments.
Meh...
Perhaps this is the thread wherein I should apologise to all whom I may have offended in the columns of AB.

Sorry folks.....Hans.
