New Ved Announced Yesterday In The Budget
19 Answers
Does anyone know how this is going to work ? Osborne said that with this new VED from 2017, new cars will pay emissions-based VE - £140 for the vast majority of vehicles.
But I thought that it was already emission-based. I drive a Fiesta, with a 1.4l diesel engine and I pay no VED. So exactly what is going to change from 2017 ?

It looks as if my 1.5 tdi Fiesta has a figure of 98 emissions, so it will be £140 a year, instead of £0, which is what I pay at present.
I am due to change the car in May 2017, probably for the same model, so a clear tax increase, from a Government that prides itself in cutting taxes !

I suppose I could buy another model Naomi, but it would have to be one that makes no emissions, in order to pay £0 VED. I may be wrong here but that would seem to leave only daft cars like the Nissan Leaf that will remain free, and what possible use would a car like that be to me, or pretty well anybody else ?
This is clearly a tax increase.

Be lucky you don't have a Labour inspired emission zone on your doorstep. All the artisans around here had to scrap or give away their perfectly good vans and buy new ones that were dictated by Government that fitted their criteria. I wasn't allowed to purchase a diesel powered Defender with soft top unless I paid a charge to enter the zone. The local TA Logistics Corps just within the zone were driving their Defenders with no penalty.
